On the way to Kolkatta for a business trip, I took a 5 day trip to Darjeeling, "Queen of the Hills", situated at the foot of the Himalayas, in West Bengal, India. Darjeeling is surrounded by hills filled with lush green tea gardens and vivid, colourful temples.

Stop # 1
ExploreMahakal Mandir
Nice walk along the observation hill will lead you to this colourful temple. Be sure to visit early in the morning to catch a glimpse of the snow capped Himalayas before they disappear beyond the mist later in the day.
Mahakal Mandir
Entrance to the peaceful temple atop the hills. You can hear the magnificent tune of prayer bells ringing throughout the temple.
Observatory Hill
Get up early and take a walk around Observatory hill. On one side sits the Himalayas in the distant, and the other is surrounded by lush greenery- If you're lucky you'll spot a monkey or too. It can be quite cold high up in the mist, be sure to bring a coat!
Peace Pagoda
Join in the prayer drumming for a blessing, or simply enjoy the views from the pagoda next to a large golden Buddha.
Dali Monastery
One of the larger, more exquisite and yet less visited monasteries in Darjeeling. The buildings are filled with intricate design and vivid colours. Since not many tourists visit, you can freely roam the monastery and talk with the monks (if you speak the language!)
Dali Monastery
In my opinion this was one of the most beautiful places in Darjeeling. With no hoards of tourists or hawkers around, you can peacefully and freely roam around the grounds and take in the culture and beauty of the place.
TIger Hill
On a clear night/ day, see the golden sun rise over the snow capped Himalayas at Tiger Hill, then visit the nearby temple and watch the local offer prayers. (Unfortunately for me it wasnt a clear day that morning so I didnt get to see the sunrise)

EventThis part of the trip was for work. The city itself is a bit of a culture shock. You'll find the "real India" experience here.
